What the manufacturer publishes about the ground

Tracks buy flotation, and what they cost you in return is written into the owner’s manual rather than onto the product page. Four passages in Camso’s ATV manual bear on terrain, and together they describe a machine that wants continuous ground under all four units and does not want to be driven over things. Read them before the first ride out: the first one is about breaking the system or the machine, not about getting stuck.

The practical reading: a log or a ridge that a wheeled quad would step over is the obstacle the manual warns about twice, because it can lodge between the front and rear units and immobilise the machine. Plan a line that stays on ground which carries all four units, take slopes squarely rather than traversing them, and treat the obstacle height in that caution as a ceiling rather than a target.

That is the whole of the published record on the subject, and it is worth noticing what kind of document it is. Those four passages are cautions about damage, written by the people who make the system. None of them says what the machine does on muskeg, or in wet snow that packs and refreezes, or on ground that is frozen at eight in the morning and not at two in the afternoon. No manufacturer publishes that, because it is not a property of the product.

Nobody has ridden any of it for this site

The ground this section was opened for — muskeg, wet Cascade snow, spring breakup — has not been ridden and written down by anybody here, and nothing on this page says when it will be. It is unwritten for the reason the rest of the site keeps naming: it needs a machine, a season and somebody standing in the right place with a notebook. A regional report assembled out of other people’s accounts would be a summary of the internet with a date on it, which is the opposite of what this section is for.

What a ground report would have to contain

This is the specification rather than a promise, and it is published so that anything appearing under this section later can be held against it. A report missing any of these is a ride story; the point of the section is that it is a record somebody else can use.

The machine, in full: make, model, model year, rear-suspension layout, and which track system was on it. Not “a quad on tracks”.

The date, and the place at the resolution the place can bear — a named drainage, a named unit of public land, a road end. A region is not a place.

The ground, described as it was on the day rather than as the season generally is: depth, what was under the depth, whether it was frozen, and at what time of day that changed.

What stopped the machine, if anything did, and what it took to get moving again. A report in which nothing goes wrong is worth publishing only if it says what was attempted.

The system's own settings on the day — track tension, and whether it was set to the manufacturer's summer or winter figure — because a report against an unknown tension cannot be compared with anything.

Photographs taken on the ground being described, with the machine in frame, and the frames identified as that machine on that day rather than as illustration.

What it would take. One rider, one machine, one kind of ground, and the discipline to write it down the same day. Three separate seasons and three separate regions before the section is a section — a single report is one report, and the standing rule here is that nothing generalises across places on the strength of one of them.

Until then the two pages that carry the figures deciding where the machine can go at all are trailering a tracked quad, for how wide, tall and heavy it becomes with tracks fitted, and legal and access, for what an agency will let you ride on. Both are desk work, both are sourced, and neither is a substitute for the reports above.
